Qwert’s Handset Philosophy
Handsets > Handset Philosophy

Use QWERT with ANY unlocked GSM handset (i.e. an unlocked AT&T or T-Mobile handset). QWERT looks at handsets a little differently than most other service providers. We don’t lure you in with the promise of the newest technology and gadgetry in fancy handsets and then strap you down with a two year contract. QWERT gives our customers the choice of ANY unlocked GSM handset and pay as you go service. We want your individual needs and price points matched in the perfect handset.

Why GSM?
GSM is the Global Standard for Mobile communications. This means that almost 80% of global mobile users use GSM. Therefore, QWERTers have a huge selection of handsets to choose from because every major handset producer makes GSM handsets. GSM was also the technology that pioneered Short Message Service (SMS) or text messaging-so QWERT and GSM are a natural fit. GSM handsets can also work abroad with a country-specific SIM card.

What is an unlocked handset?
An unlocked handset is one that can be used with any GSM network. Carriers “lock” handsets so that the handset only works on their particular network. Once a handset has been unlocked, it can be used on any GSM network. Locked handsets can be unlocked using a simple software code obtained from either the carrier or from online unlocking companies.

width=Choosing your handset
As outlined on our Handsets page, there are three easy ways to get an unlocked GSM handset:
1.  Unlock your current GSM handset.
2.  Find unlocked GSM handsets online or at retailers starting at $19.99.
3.  Purchase a handset from QWERT’s limited selection of handsets in stock.

QWERT’s limited selection of handsets
Although you have the choice of ANY unlocked GSM handset, QWERT offers our customers a few handset options for one stop shopping. We have searched the globe to find the most affordable handsets available and offer them to our QWERTers at our wholesale cost. We are NOT a handset company-so if our handsets aren’t exactly what you’re looking for or you find a cheaper handset elsewhere, we won’t be offended. We aren’t making any profit off them anyway.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Handset

New vs. Refurbished
If you need to purchase an unlocked GSM handset, we recommend purchasing a new handset. In our experience, refurbished handsets can have functionality and battery life issues. We also recommend you buy a newer model handset. Even brand new older model handsets (older than 3 or 4 years) can occasionally have battery life issues.

QWERTY keyboard
If you are a texting maniac, or have purchased the unlimited plan-you might need a handset with a QWERTY keyboard. These handsets tend to cost more, but your thumbs will thank you.

Voice and Data through WiFi enabled handsets
Add a QWERT plan to your WiFi enabled handset (like the iPhone and G1) and have data and voice (through VoIP applications like Skype, Truphone, and Fring) in WiFi hotspots and QWERT text everywhere else. It’s a great way to save on voice/data/web cell packages, while just paying for texting with QWERT.

If you don’t recognize some of those funny words and acronyms up there, let us explain:

WiFi and Hotspots
WiFi enabled handsets, or devices like the iTouch, are handsets that can connect to the internet in WiFi hotspots. WiFi hotspots are areas where you can connect to wireless internet. WiFi hotspots are all over the place-you probably already spend a lot of time in a hotspot. Most likely, you have WiFi at home and at work. Hotspots are also in coffee shops, McDonald’s, book stores, malls, libraries, etc.

VoIP
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol-and basically means making phone calls over the internet. Skype, Fring, and Truphone are all VoIP applications. They can make free voice phone calls to other Skype, Fring, and Truphone users and have low fees for calling non users or landlines.

Of course, if you truly need a text only plan, then you can get a simple handset and a QWERT SIM card. But if you are looking for voice/data/web features-then WiFi and VoIP are great low cost options.

Happy QWERTing!
